How Is Amethyst formed?

Amethyst shares its resemblance to Quartz as it comes from the same family. This enables the crystal to form in the exact same way to most Quartz.

With a geothermal (fancy word for hot and in the ground) reaction where they form within the tiny-tiny gaps in the lava, the rich Silica waters evaporate producing bubbles containing the chemicals for the soon to be crystal. They float up and get trapped in the lava gaps (mentioned before) crystallising.

The distinct purple hue is thanks to the presence of iron and magnesium in the natural habitat where the crystal is found. As the elements are abundant in the outer most crust of the earth hence why it is a fairly common and well-know crystal.
